Fiona Hollinger

Music and Art CoOrdinator

Bachelor 0f Education

I started studying Early Childhood after returning from Sweden and the two occupations have worked well together ever since. I am continually learning myself having completed an Associate Diploma in Social Science (Child Studies), Certificate IV in Visual Arts, Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood) Degree. I am now completing my final year in a Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Specialisation) Degree. I sing with a local a Capella chorus/choir which has just competed in Hobart. I am hoping to make a CD in the not too distant future for my grandchildren that live in both Sweden and Denmark. I hope that even if children do not learn to sing or play a musical instrument that they will develop a joy and an appreciation of music.

I have the wonderful privilege of working with both children and music as the teacher for the music programs between our 3 centres. The majority of children I meet seem to enjoy listening, moving and making sounds with music. Music in some form or another has always been a part of my life too, I started out as a folksinger, singing in various restaurants in The Rocks area of Sydney and then overseas in Sweden. I did folk dancing then and studied Dance Drama with the Margaret Barr Dance Company as well.

I use different techniques to teach music such as visual charts with notation, sound and instrument playing as well physical movement to reinforce musical skills. This style of teaching is closely aligned to the Zoltan Kodaly method of teaching music to young children.

Jane Nelson

Studying Certificate III in children’s services

I am originally from Tasmania, but after living on the coast for about 18 years I guess I can now consider myself a Gold Coaster. I love the weather here and really embrace an outdoor lifestyle.

My passion is cooking and teaching people about healthy food. I fully believe that “food is medicine”. I originally trained at the Sheraton Marina Mirage and since then have worked mostly in organics and clean foods. I “live” food! I love cooking it, eating it and reading about it.

I also hold my Cert 3 and 4 in Fitness, so feel free to ask if you have any nutrition or fitness questions that I can help you with.
